Position Overview

The successful candidate will report to the General Counsel and will assist in providing corporate, regulatory, HR and business advice to a broad range of client departments and senior management. Although the primary focus will be to assist with Quebec/RE matters, the individual will also assist on other legal matters when necessary.


Experience Requirements

The successful candidate will have between 4 to 6 years of corporate/commercial law experience in a manufacturing environment (or with such clients), experience with employment and labor issues, as well as regulatory exposure, gained from a major law firm or in-house legal department.

Candidates must also have excellent business acumen, understanding of commercial contracting principles, and a strong general knowledge of legal matters in a business setting gained through several years of practical experience.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • The ability to successfully review, negotiate and draft commercial agreements
  • Day to day resolution of complex business and legal issues
  • Keeping abreast of relevant laws and regulations and informing the company of changes that impact compliance and operations
  • Advising on employment and labor related matters
  • Advising on intellectual property matters, product development and labeling, product liability, and other matters relevant to the manufacture and sales of fuel ethanol, CO2, methanol, green hydrogen, and food and pharmaceutical grade alcohol
  • Interacting with and helping stakeholders respond to regulatory inquiries and audits
  • Providing compliance advice to ensure that regulatory reporting requirements and standard operating procedures (SOP) are being met
  • Advising on advertising and promotion strategies and activities, including the use of social media
  • Delivering employee training on various compliance and regulatory matters.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Be fully bilingual
  • Have graduated from an accredited law school, be a member of the Quebec Bar, and be qualified to practice law in the province of Quebec
  • Have a minimum of 4 years’ experience following their call to the Bar, either in a law firm or in a manufacturing environment, or ideally a combination thereof
  • While not essential, membership in the Ontario Bar would certainly be considered an asset.
