Lightning Strike Causes Storage Tank Fire at Greenfield Global’s Chatham Facility; No Injuries Reported
Chatham, Ontario, September 16, 2026 — In the early hours of September 16, lightning struck a corn-based ethanol storage tank at Greenfield Global’s Chatham facility. No injuries were reported, and all employees and personnel on-site are safe.
The fire was isolated to the storage tank farm, has been extinguished, and there does not appear to be damage to any other section of the plant.
Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services, Chatham-Kent Police, and mutual-aid resources from neighboring communities and industry partners responded quickly and remain on site. We are grateful for their swift response. Greenfield Global is working closely with local authorities to ensure compliance with all environmental and regulatory requirements.
Greenfield’s top priority is the safety of our employees and community and minimizing the impact to our customers. We are continually monitoring the situation and will share additional information as it becomes available and confirmed.
