Strategic Partnership Makes Greenfield Global The Only Grain Alcohol Producer in the US with Manufacturing, Packaging, and Distribution Capabilities Nationwide

La Mirada, California — September 27, 2023 — Greenfield Global Inc., the leading producer, manufacturer and distributor of high purity and specialty alcohols, solvents, and custom solutions, has partnered with REMET Alcohols, Inc. to address the growing demand in California and the Western US for bulk and packaged high-purity alcohol and denatured alcohol. With today’s announcement, Greenfield extends its bulk manufacturing and distribution capability and footprint westward, enhancing supply for the industrial, food, fragrance, pharmaceutical, personal care, and beverage industries in California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington and Arizona.

“After an extensive search for the right partner to expand our operations west of the Mississippi, REMET Alcohols was the clear choice,” said Howard Field, President and CEO, Greenfield Global. “REMET Alcohols has an amazing team and years of experience meeting the quality and service needs of customers on the West Coast. Their deep expertise in logistics, rail connections and bulk tankage will allow us to satisfy the growing demand in the Western United States. Greenfield will continue to directly supply its customers, while REMET will procure Greenfield ethanol and manage their own clients, simplifying the process for all parties involved.”

Under the agreement, the partnership offers unmatched supply security, distribution capabilities in fast-growing markets, and enhanced efficiency to both REMET Alcohols and Greenfield customers by:

  • Adding the Greater Los Angeles area to Greenfield’s Connecticut and Kentucky manufacturing portfolio.
  • Combining REMET Alcohols’, onsite storage, rail, and manufacturing capabilities with Greenfield’s efficient, and reliable end-to-end supply chain oversight for premium ethanol products.
  • Providing REMET Alcohols’ customers with industry-leading high purity alcohols directly from Greenfield’s distilleries, giving them the confidence in security of supply and quality.

This announcement follows Greenfield’s recent expansion in high-purity alcohol production, boosting its annual output to over 70 million gallons per year across three distilleries.

“This is certainly a win-win because REMET Alcohols’ tried and true bulk and packaged blending and distribution service will be complimented by Greenfield’s gold standard quality in ethanol production, and visa versa.” said John S. Paraszczak, President and CEO at REMET® Corporation. “REMET owes some of its success to long-term relationships and superior customer satisfaction – and we are committed to maintaining these qualities and results in this new partnership with Greenfield.”

Leading ethanol producer’s $160M expansion satisfies growing customer demand and security of supply from three distilleries

Toronto, Ontario — September 11, 2023 — Greenfield Global Inc, a world-renowned manufacturer and distributor of specialty alcohols, solvents, and custom solutions, has successfully completed its 30 million gallon alcohol upgrade at its Johnstown distillery, increasing the company’s overall production of high-purity alcohol to nearly 70 million gallons per year.  With the expansion project now commissioned and validated, the distillery is exceptionally efficient at producing high-purity alcohol, and has begun to ship both 190 and 200 proof alcohol to customers by tanker trucks and rail cars, as well as to its downstream blending and packaging facilities in the US, Canada and Europe.

“Global demand for our high-purity alcohols in key industries including life sciences, food, flavors and fragrances, personal care, and beverage alcohol has exceeded our production capacity for the past few years,” stated Howard Field, President and CEO, Greenfield Global. “Our 30 million gallon production increase will ensure that we can supply our customers through their growth plans with the highest quality standards for which Greenfield is known. Moreover, considering the critical part we play in hundreds of our customers’ supply chains, the expansion upgrade ensures even greater security of supply across our three high-purity alcohol distilleries – especially at a time when older, less economically viable distilleries in the industry are shuttering.”

Greenfield’s Johnstown distillery upgrades include:

  • An industry-leading, high-efficiency 30-million-gallon beverage and pharmaceutical-grade alcohol distillation system providing customers with the purest ethanol commercially available.
  • A state-of-the-art GMP laboratory assuring consistent levels of product quality and controls.
  • Robust railcar and tanker truck load-outs allowing for pure and blended production at the time of filling, and ensuring shipments get to customers as efficiently as possible.

In concert with Greenfield’s downstream blending and packaging facilities in the U.S., Canada and Europe, the Johnstown high-purity alcohol upgrade will enhance the company’s delivery logistics throughout the United States and Canada, as well as by vessel world-wide.

“Our unique “chain of custody” model allows us to trace the delivery of our alcohol to customers via rail, tanker truck, iso-containers, totes, drums, pails, biobags and more, right back to the load of corn that was delivered to our distilleries which is important to many of our customers.” Field continued. “Greenfield has built a reputation for product quality and consistency, and the Johnstown upgrade will enable us to satisfy the growth of our customers, while adding new customers as well.”

Greenfield extends its thanks to the Government of Ontario for their support of the project through the Ontario Together Fund (OTF) of the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade (MEDJCT). Since its establishment in 2008, Greenfield’s Johnstown distillery has been integral to the economic growth and development of the local community. The upgrade has created 19 full-time jobs, plus many indirect jobs in the Johnstown community, and is a further commitment to Greenfield’s 15+ years of support for the local economy.

In today’s dynamic and ever-evolving global supply chain landscape, Greenfield is your steadfast partner, dedicated to delivering not just products, but comprehensive solutions and knowledge that empower your success.

At Greenfield, we understand that your journey in the supply chain is not just about procurement; it’s a collaborative endeavor where we strategize, innovate, and navigate challenges together. Your challenges are our challenges, and your successes are our successes. We are fully invested in your growth and prosperity.

Empowering Your Success Through Knowledge and Solutions

In the complex tapestry of today’s supply landscape, information holds immense power. We are unwavering in our commitment to arming you with the latest industry knowledge and insights, because when you are well-informed, you can make confident decisions, foresee market shifts, and remain at the forefront of industry trends.

Before delving into our role in supporting your supply chain needs, let’s take a high-level look at the current supply chain landscape:

The global supply chain landscape remains balanced in terms of domestic supply and demand, but caution prevails as customers exercise prudence to avoid overstocking, learning from past demand miscalculations. Rising fuel and energy costs, notably the consistent upward trend in diesel prices, introduce added complexity.

Carriers in the trucking market hold optimism for a robust recovery by 2024. Signs of seasonal activity and merchandise restocking are apparent; however, customers proceed cautiously, mindful of potential uncertainties. Smaller carriers grapple with financial challenges amid rising rates and inflation pressures. While contract rate renewals for the coming year are uncertain, significant declines are not expected.

On the global economic front, the US economy maintains its robustness, marked by strong GDP growth. However, a tight job market is expected to persist until 2024. In contrast, the Eurozone faces challenges, with Germany officially in a recession. China’s economic rebound falls short of expectations, particularly in sectors like industrial production. Japan’s economic recovery proceeds steadily, while Latin America anticipates subdued growth.

In terms of inflation, a notable surge in US CPI is primarily attributed to supply-demand imbalances. Core services CPI remains elevated, and producer prices (PPI) see a substantial uptick, especially for goods. Indicators within the PPI pipeline suggest growing demand.

Greenfield’s Innovations and Expansions, here for our customers:

Now, with this understanding of the global supply chain landscape, let’s delve into how Greenfield is positioned to meet your specific needs, provide solutions, and drive your success in this intricate and ever-evolving ecosystem.

The $2M Government of Canada investment is advancing company’s “waste-to-fuel” technology

Greenfield Global Inc., Canada’s leading alcohol, solvent and biofuels producer, yesterday welcomed Mr. Francis Drouin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, to Greenfield’s sponsored laboratory space at the University of Alberta to share progress on a $2M agricultural waste-to-clean fuel project funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada under the Agricultural Clean Technology (ACT) Program, Research and Innovation stream.

Greenfield, in close collaboration with the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Engineering, is leading the development of a new clean technology that will convert agricultural waste into renewable diesel fuel. Promoting a circular agriculture economy, this technology has the potential of reducing the overall greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural and transportation sectors by up to 90% when compared to fossil-based diesel fuel.

“Climate change solutions not only help the environment but can also improve the economy and support producers – and projects like this are a great example,” said Francis Drouin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, on behalf of the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau. “This new technology will convert agricultural waste to renewable fuel, add value for producers and boost the energy industry, all while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

“Our R&D collaboration with the University of Alberta to produce drop-in, renewable diesel fuel from organic waste will allow farming, trucking, construction, standby generators, and other fossil fuel intensive sectors to decarbonize, which is directly aligned with Canada’s climate action plans and helping Canada achieve net-zero emissions by 2050”, said Howard Field, President and CEO of Greenfield Global. “Greenfield has been decarbonizing Canada’s light-duty vehicle emissions for decades, producing fuel ethanol from industrial corn that is blended into gasoline. We are dedicated to the ongoing development of state-of-the-art technology with our partners in research, agriculture, and industry and we appreciate the Government of Canada’s shared commitment and support for innovative and important climate technologies.”

Additional benefits of Greenfield’s technology include being feedstock agnostic and utilizing a spoke-and-hub approach to the collection of feedstocks, production of biocrude, and the refining of biocrude into renewable diesel.

Three key contributors that supported Greenfield’s funding submission process and helped make this project possible were the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, and the Grain Farmers of Ontario. The collaboration of all parties involved will contribute to the successful commercialization of this technology which will produce a sustainable liquid fuel, improve waste management and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In 1991, Greenfield Global, then Sunroot, acquired a small business known as Commercial Alcohols Ltd. This venture started Greenfield down a path of supplying high-purity specialty chemicals and ingredients, under the coveted Pharmco brand, to our commercial, life science, herbal extraction, food, flavor and fragrance industry partners the world over.

CHATHAM, ON, Sept. 11, 2017 /CNW/ – Canada’s agriculture and agri-food industry is an important driver of economic growth in Canada. The Government of Canada continues to support the sector as it reduces emissions and adopts sustainable practices that lead to more efficient use of water and energy.

Member of Parliament Peter Fragiskatos (London North Centre), on behalf of Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay, announced today an investment of up to $3.7 million for two Chatham companies to collaboratively reduce their environmental footprint, while making their operations more productive and competitive.

The investment is enabling Greenfield Global to install new Dutch technology that pipes waste heat and carbon-dioxide across the road to Truly Green Farms, reducing the greenhouse energy costs and boosting tomato yields.

Quotes

“The environment and the economy go hand in hand, and our government knows that supporting sustainable solutions in agriculture will spur clean innovation, create jobs, and lead to a stronger agricultural sector. This project is a great example of two Chatham companies working together to improve greenhouse yields, while lowering their environmental footprint.”
– MP Peter Fragiskatos (London North Centre)

“The environmental benefits of ethanol production can extend well beyond the gas tank. This investment is helping Greenfield convert what was previously waste heat vented from a heat stack at our ethanol facility in Chatham, into the heat needed to grow greenhouse tomatoes with lower energy use and heating costs. Working with greenhouses, we are expanding opportunities for sustainability both in our products and how we produce them.”
– Howard Field, President and CEO of Greenfield Global

“Sustainable agriculture improves the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the jobs in our communities. Truly Green has developed an innovative partnership with Greenfield to use waste heat from its ethanol process to boost the production of our greenhouse tomatoes. This investment is helping us become the first greenhouse of its kind to be warmed by waste heat. It will also make us one of the most energy-efficient greenhouses in North America.”
– Greg Devries, President Truly Green Farms & Cedarline Greenhouses

VARENNES, QC, Aug. 15, 2017 /CNW/ – Greenfield Global Inc., (formerly GreenField Specialty Alcohols Inc.) Canada’s largest ethanol producer and a world leader in high-purity specialty alcohols, announced today that it has commenced a feasibility study to significantly expand operations for sustainable biofuel production at its biorefinery in Varennes, Quebec.

The first ethanol plant built in Quebec, the Varennes distillery is a model for waste water management and energy efficiency. The plant already produces some of the lowest carbon fuel ethanol in North America and is on its way to becoming part of a state of the art biorefinery complex. The potential expansion stands to increase its annual ethanol production capacity by 70% (from 170 mly to 300 mly).  The feasibility study will also incorporate the adaptation of emerging advanced biofuels technologies using non-traditional feedstocks and processes, including cellulosic ethanol, renewable diesel, and renewable natural gas.

The expansion study comes at a time when governments are seeking to reduce the harmful environmental effects of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The Government of Canada is consulting on a national Clean Fuels Standard with an overall objective to achieve 30 megatonnes of annual reductions in GHG emissions by 2030. And, as part of its 2030 Energy Policy, Quebec’s 2017-2020 Action Plan calls for the adoption of regulations establishing the province’s first ever volumetric requirements on renewables starting at 5% for gasoline and 2% for diesel; as well as a 5% volumetric requirement for renewable natural gas.

In commenting on the announcement, Greenfield Global’s President and CEO Howard Field stated, “Greenfield understands very well the need to produce low-carbon biofuels and renewable energy if Canada is going to meet its Paris Accord commitments. We are committed to being a strong partner in building a low-carbon economy – both through the process by which we manufacture our ethanol, and the biofuel itself. Expanding biofuels production in Varennes would make both a meaningful contribution towards achieving Canada’s GHG reduction targets, and is perfectly aligned with the goals of Quebec’s 2030 Energy Policy and 2013-2020 Climate Change Action Plan.”

The assessment process will include a thorough review of available feedstocks and technologies.  As has always been the case, Greenfield remains focused on job creation, local environment and economic benefits, agriculture, and advancing research in developing the next generation of its biofuel production platform.

New Name Reflects Strength of Product Lines, Global Reach, and Scale

TORONTO, ON, 25 May 2017— GreenField Specialty Alcohols Inc., Canada’s largest ethanol producer and a world leader in high-purity specialty alcohols, announced today it has changed its name to Greenfield Global. The name change reflects the company’s broader product categories and its expertise in driving innovations to demonstrate and commercialize new biochemicals and biofuels.

“Today, we are the largest ethanol producer in Canada and a leading producer of many grades of specialty alcohols. But we also produce and sell numerous other products in markets around the world,” said President and CEO Howard Field, who joined the company in 2014. “Our legacy name no longer fully described our company. We want to ensure that our brand accurately reflects the full scope of who we are, what we do, and where we’re going.”

Over the years, Greenfield Global has achieved exponential growth by combining organic expansions with prudent, strategic acquisitions and best-in-class operations and efficiency. Coupled with a passion for innovation, Greenfield Global is positioned to make a meaningful contribution to the development of the future low-carbon economy through the process by which it manufactures its products, and the products themselves.

“Our vision of a bio-based, low-carbon economy is very important to us,” continued Field. “We are consistently achieving lower carbon intensity goals at our production facilities, and many of the products we manufacture are either cleaner-burning fuels or biochemicals replacing petrochemicals. As the world seeks new forms of energy from renewable feedstocks, new technology pathways for the production of advanced biofuels and biochemicals are critical. At Greenfield Global, we are nimbly working on commercializing a number of them.”

As part of its rebranding, Greenfield Global also introduced a new logo and will change its domain address (email and website) to Greenfield.com. The new name and branding is effective immediately and will be implemented across the company’s products and services throughout the calendar year and 2018. Greenfield Global’s specialty alcohols and solvents brands “Commercial Alcohols” and “Pharmco-Aaper” will remain as they are leading, respected brands within their markets.
